A patrol of US soldiers from the 9th Division in a leech infested rice paddy field in the Tan An Delta, Vietnam, 1968.
The rice paddies with their quilt like patterns of water filled fields made movement difficult and were commonly used to set
booby traps, particularly on the paths along the edges. The elephant grass surrounding the fields was difficult to get through and was high enough and thick enough to hide an entire military unit waiting to make an ambush.
